MAG saves lives and builds the future by working with others to reclaim land contaminated by the debris of conflict, to reduce the daily risk of death or injury to civilians, and to create safe and secure conditions for development . MAG shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for our landmine banning work. Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict.
About the Laos program:
Laos has the unenviable title of being the most bombed country in the world per capita. For nearly a decade, Laos was subjected to heavy American bombardment as part of the larger war in Indochina. American bombing records show that at least two million metric tons of munitions were dropped between 1964 and 1973.
Working in Xieng Khouang and Khammouane provinces since 1994, MAG has directly helped over 1,070,000 people live safer lives, free from harm and fear. 2.6 million additional men, women and children benefited indirectly. Our teams cleared over 88,000,000 square meters of land in Laos, removing and destroying over 295,000 UXO, including over 163,000 cluster munitions. In addition, MAG gave over 3,400 risk education sessions to around 128,000 people, helping them to stay safe until the land was cleared.
